Why is it so often that the more we try to change the more stuck we feel? Many people come to therapy believing that they need to fix themselves, eliminate anxiety and force themselves into confidence. But one of the greatest psychological paradoxes is that true change begins with self-acceptance.

This idea is also known as Roger’s Paradox “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” (Carl R. Rogers, On Becoming a Person: A Therapist’s View of Psychotherapy) aligns with the core principle in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy & schema therapy : the more we resist our thoughts and emotions, usually the stronger they become. If you have ever felt that you are fighting an endless battle against yourself, it might be time for a different approach.

CBT: changing the way we relate to our thoughts

Change does not come from forcing positivity or suppressing negative thoughts– it comes from acknowledging them without judgment and learning to engage with them differently and shift your perspective in a realistic way.

Schema Therapy: Healing deep rooted beliefs

Schema therapy dives deeper into the core beliefs that keep us trapped in self- doubt and self-criticism. These schemas often developed in childhood and influence the way we see ourselves and the word. The key is recognizing, understanding, and gradually healing these patterns through self-compassion.

Why self-acceptance leads to real change?

You need to understand yourself better and here are some examples of how this leads to change:

Less self-criticism: you learn to challenge your inner critic instead of being controlled by it

More emotional balance: you stop reacting out of fear and start responding with clarity

Stronger self-worth: you stop chasing external validation and start trusting yourself

The Paradox? When you stop forcing change, change happens more easily

Therapy can help you navigate this journey:

Identify and reshape unhelpful thought patterns and beliefs

Develop healthier more grounded and self-compassionate perspectives

Create lasting change that isn’t about replacing negative patterns and thoughts with superficial positivity but rather engage with them in a more adaptive and balanced way.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where a thought pops into your mind, and suddenly, you can’t think of anything else? For most of us, these thoughts come and go without much impact, but for those with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), they can spiral into intense anxiety, driving compulsive behaviors in an attempt to relieve the discomfort. OCD is more than just having a few strange thoughts or repeating behaviors—it’s a constant, overwhelming struggle with intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and compulsive actions (compulsions) that interfere with daily life.

Imagine you’ve just shaken hands with a colleague at work. A moment later, you have this overwhelming thought: What if they’ve been sick? What if I’ve just touched something contaminated? At first, you might dismiss it. But then, the thought keeps replaying. You start feeling the sticky sensation of dirt on your hands, even though they feel clean. The anxiety builds, and you find yourself heading to the nearest sink, scrubbing your hands again and again—just to be sure. For someone with OCD, the mind doesn’t just have random thoughts; it gets trapped in cycles. Imagine having a thought that won’t go away, like “What if I left the stove on?” or “What if I touched something contaminated?” It’s not that the person believes these things are true, but the fear they generate feels so real that they feel compelled to do something—often repeatedly—to try and relieve the anxiety. These compulsive behaviors might include washing hands obsessively, checking locks multiple times, or arranging things in a particular order.

The Struggle: The Reality of Uncertainty

What characterizes OCD is the intensity of the fear and the need to perform rituals or behaviors to prevent something bad from happening. In OCD, the fear feels genuine, even though the reality of the threat is often irrational. This is why people with OCD know their thoughts are unrealistic, but they still feel paralyzed by them. For example, someone with contamination OCD might constantly fear they’re carrying germs; despite knowing they’ve washed their hands or avoided touching unclean surfaces.

The feeling of certainty that comes with performing a compulsion—whether it’s washing hands or checking if a door is locked—is temporary. It doesn’t last. In fact, it can make the obsession stronger, leading to a vicious cycle of anxiety, fear, and compulsive actions.

Common Obsessions and Compulsions

OCD manifests in various ways. Some people struggle with contamination fears, constantly worrying about dirt, germs, or being exposed to harmful substances. Others might have obsessive thoughts about harming others or making mistakes, even if they never act on them. Other common themes include fears of symmetry, counting, or even fears of saying the wrong thing.

While each person with OCD experiences these obsessions and compulsions differently, the underlying theme is the same: an overwhelming need to control uncertainty and reduce anxiety.

Breaking the cycle of OCD

Breaking free from the cycle of OCD isn’t about eliminating the thoughts entirely; it’s about learning how to manage the anxiety that accompanies them. With the right treatment, which often includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and sometimes medication, people with OCD can learn to face their fears without giving in to the urge to perform compulsions. Over time, they can build a life where the thoughts no longer have the same power over them.

In today’s fast-paced world, mental health care is more important than ever. However, traditional therapy often presents challenges such as time constraints, geographical limitations, and stigma. Online therapy has emerged as a transformative solution, offering a convenient and accessible way to seek mental health support. Here are some of the key benefits of online therapy that make it an effective and appealing option for many.

Accessibility and Convenience

One of the most significant advantages of online therapy is its accessibility. With just an internet connection, individuals can access therapy sessions from the comfort of their home, office, or any private space. This eliminates the need for commuting, saving both time and energy. For those living in remote or underserved areas where mental health professionals may not be readily available, online therapy ensures that quality care is within reach.

Flexibility to Fit Your Schedule

Online therapy offers unparalleled flexibility. Clients can schedule sessions at times that suit their lifestyle, whether that’s during a lunch break, after work, or even on weekends. This flexibility makes it easier for people with busy lives, parents, and professionals to prioritize their mental health without disrupting their daily routines.

Anonymity and Reduced Stigma

For some, the stigma surrounding mental health can be a barrier to seeking help. Online therapy provides a level of anonymity that traditional therapy may not offer. Without the need to visit a physical office, clients can feel more comfortable and less self-conscious about receiving support. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who may feel apprehensive about being seen entering a therapy clinic.

Tailored Support for a Global Audience

Online therapy bridges the gap for individuals living abroad or those in multicultural settings. Many therapists, like myself, offer services specifically tailored to expatriates and multicultural clients, addressing unique challenges such as cultural adjustment, homesickness, and language barriers. This global accessibility ensures that individuals can receive support that resonates with their personal experiences.

Maintaining Continuity of Care

Life changes such as relocation, travel, or unforeseen circumstances can disrupt in-person therapy. Online therapy allows clients to maintain continuity of care, ensuring that progress is not interrupted. This is especially important for individuals who require ongoing support or are managing long-term mental health conditions.

Effectiveness Backed by Research

Studies consistently show that online therapy can be just as effective as traditional in-person therapy. Whether it’s for anxiety, depression, stress management, or relationship issues, evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) translate seamlessly into the online format, providing clients with practical tools to improve their well-being.

In conclusion, online therapy is revolutionizing the way we approach mental health care. By breaking down barriers and offering accessible, flexible, and effective support, it empowers individuals to prioritize their mental well-being in a way that fits their lives. If you’re considering therapy but are hesitant due to logistical or emotional challenges, online therapy might be the perfect solution to help you take the first step toward a healthier, happier you.
